AC/DC finally returned to the stage at this past weekend’s Power Trip Festival, the new hard rock/heavy metal festival that took place at Coachella’s home, the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, CA, with Judas Priest (who announced a new album in conjunction with the fest), Iron Maiden, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, and Tool. The fest was AC/DC’s first show in seven years, and first since releasing their 2020 comeback album Power Up, and they made the live debuts of two songs from that album, “Demon Fire” and “Shot In The Dark,” during their set.
It was also their first show with Brian Johnson on vocals since February 28, 2016–doctors had ordered Brian to stop touring due to health issues, and the tour was completed with Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose on vocals. Power Trip found AC/DC playing “Dog Eat Dog” with Brian for the first time since 2009, and “Riff Raff” with Brian for the first time since 1996. They also played “Stiff Upper Lip” for the first time in general since 2003.
AC/DC’s drummer for the show was Matt Laug (Alanis Morissette, Alice Cooper, etc), who had previously opened for AC/DC on tour when he was drumming in Slash’s band Slash’s Snakepit in 2001. AC/DC had parted ways with longtime drummer Phil Rudd after he was faced with drug possession and threatening-to-kill charges in 2014, though he reunited with the band for the making of Power Up. They were also back with longtime bassist Cliff Williams, who had planned to retire from AC/DC after the 2016 tour. The lineup was completed by guitarist Angus Young (the band’s only original member) and Angus’ nephew Stevie Young on guitar.
AC/DC wasn’t the only band at Power Trip with classic members making returns. Judas Priest welcomed back original guitarist Glenn Tipton, who stopped touring in 2018, to play the final three songs of their set with them. See Priest’s full setlist and some video here.
