Messex said:
In 1993, I listened obsessively to Bad Religion’s “How Hell Could Be Worse.” I have a battered cassette that I’ll listen to over and over on my walkman. This record reminds me of the hardcore scene of the early 80s when I was growing up, which included Circle Jerks, The Germs, The Adolescents. I wanted to make a record that reminded me of my initial urges from the early days of the hardcore scene.
I do remember the moment we started DFL. Adam stopped by my place in Echo Park and half-jokingly asked him if he wanted to start a hardcore band. To my surprise, he said, “Uh… yes!” I sang a few songs, and then we went to G-Son. I played them for Adam and that’s when the band was born.
The “My Crazy Life” era was a real moment for me, and I feel like this record captures that. Too much shit happened. Both The Brutalist and Royal Brigade blew up. There are a lot of crazy parties out there with celebrities, skaters, and all kinds of people hanging out. Almost 30 years have passed, but I have never left that moment.
The DFL have also reunited over the years and their current squad includes Tom Davies, Monty Messex, Patrick Sullivan and Jordan Jacques.
A re-release will be available on August 11th via Trust. Pre-order here and play two remastered tracks (one with new video) below.
