In 1994, Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys teamed up with Monty Messex and “Crazy Tom” Davis to form a hardcore punk band called DFL (Dead Fucking Last).Now, the band is re-releasing their debut album my crazy life The deluxe set will arrive on August 11th via Trust Records.
While pop-punk was on the rise in the ’90s, DFL attempted to return to the fast, raw sound of its hardcore roots in the ’80s. Monty Messex, who previously worked at The Atoms, recalled in a statement how the side project came to be.
“In 1993, I was obsessed with listening to Bad Religion Could it be any worse?he said. “I had an old tape that I would listen to over and over on the Walkman. This record reminds me of the hardcore scene of the early 80s when I was growing up, which included Circle Jerks, The Germs, The Adolescents. I wanted to make a record that reminded me of my initial urges from the early days of the hardcore scene. Messex asked Adam Horowitz to join him on bass “half-jokingly,” and soon they were hiring skateboarder Tom Davis on lead vocals and Tony Converse on drums.
In true punk rock fashion, my crazy life Pack 15 songs in 20 minutes.The new deluxe reissue — marking the album’s first press in 29 years and first release on 12-inch vinyl — features original songs remastered by original producer Mario Caldato Jr. on the A side, while the B side then have Live at G-Son Studios, DFL performed a previously unreleased set of works immediately after recording the album to tape.
The set also includes extended album covers, unreleased photos of the band by Sofia Coppola, flyers, archive images by Bryan Ray Turcotte, and information about the A 10,000-word oral history of the project. Pre-orders are underway.
