witness Ardi Meola To perform is to experience one of today’s greatest guitar masters. His fine workmanship is pure master. His music combines jazz, fusion, Mediterranean, Latin, rock and flamenco in an unclassifiable hybrid.
He plays the guitar in that state of flow, where time is suspended and the most important thing is the present moment. Watch him closely, his eyes are often closed and he looks as if he is meditating to music. Become one with the sound. The only occasional glances at his fellow instrumentalists during non-verbal communication are the only times you see him smile.
The instrumentation is simple: percussionist Sergio Martinez (Spain), tabla player Amit Kavthekar (India) and classical guitarist Matt Palmer (Poland). They create a full sound to compliment his guitar playing. Never overshadow and emphasize complex rhythmic and melodic passages.
He played a unique style of nylon-string classical guitar, using a combination of flat picks and fingerpicks. Dimeola desecrated traditional classical guitar conventions and did his own thing. He produces a very bright sound from the strings.
A budding virtuoso, the young DiMela dropped out of Berklee College of Music to join Return to Forever, a jazz-fusion band in the ’70s. In just one week, the 19-year-old went from being a music student to playing her first gig with the band at Carnegie Hall. It is here that he plays alongside his hero, Stanley Clarke, and Chick Corea as his protégé. out on a limb. For him he was awarded a well-deserved honorary doctorate by Berkeley.
With a taste for rock music and a well-known Beatles fan, he recorded two tribute CDs of Beatles songs with his own original arrangements: Your Life: A Tribute to The Beatles was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London Since 2013 and across the universe Start in 2020. So it’s no surprise that he played “Norwegian Wood” that night. The song fits perfectly with Kavthekar’s tabla music, embodying oriental sounds.
The song was originally recorded as a duet with the famous “Neo-Flamenco” guitarist Paco de Lucía, and the show ended with this iconic piece “Mediterranean Sundance Film Festival. Fans can now enjoy the recently released live version. Restoring some old live recordings to produce his latest CD, friday night in san francisco (Recorded 5 December 1980 – Warfield Theatre). It was recorded live as part of a guitar trio with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía.
DiMeola has more than forty albums to his credit, including Return to Forever, which he played during his tenure. And it shows no sign of slowing down. He mentioned a new record in the works, but no specifics. There will be more in the future.
