New York psych-folk artist Anastasia Coope returned this summer with her first single in two years, “Tough Sun,” which Angus Andrew of Liars released via his New Gold label. She’s since followed it with a new holiday song, “Cheshire Carol,” and she has more new music on the way in 2024. As this year ends, we’ve been asking artists about their favorite music of 2023, and Anastasia made us a list of albums. Read that, and her commentary, below.
ANASTASIA COOPE’S FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 2023
Miaux & Lieven Martens – Katharina AW: The Pels Organ and Hemony Carillon of St. Catherine’s Church in Hoogstraten [Edições CN]
Always sleeping to this record but it’s better than that. First track, best melody of the year
Anadol – Hatıralar [reissue; Pingipung]
Always love Anadol and this was almost impossible to hear until this year, a new favorite of mine and a great addition to her catalog
Various Artists – Synthetic Bird Music [Mappa Editions]
Love the Tomutonttu track on this, sounds like the Residents x Arnold Dreyblatt… gnome music
Kali Malone feat. Stephen O’Malley & Lucy Railton – Does Spring Hide Its Joy [Mego Editions]
Gemengde Vrije Lagere Oefenschool Vorselaar – Gejuich Der Auto’s [reissue; Stroom]
A Stroom release that’s a bunch of kids in a choir singing about automobiles
Svitlana Nianio – Transilvania Smile, 1994 [archival; Shukai]
She’s made some of the best music
Woo – Into the Heart of Love [reissue; Palto Flats]
Nice reissue cover even though the original was better
Baldruin – Relikte aus der Zukunft [Buh]
Carl Stone – Electronic Music From 1972-2022 [Unseen Worlds]
My own record — been done for ages, listened to it a lot this year, 2024 bound.
