Beartooth have announced their fifth studio album, surface, arriving on October 13 via Red Bull Records. Before releasing the LP, the band released the single “Might Live Myself”.
“The entire Beartooth record is a snapshot of my inner monologues and emotional states over the years, with one recurring theme: depression and self-loathing,” singer Caleb Shomo said in a statement. “It’s hard to understand why I’ve felt this way for so long. During the pandemic, I’ve been faced with two very different paths in life. One — I continued to do nothing to manage my mental health realities and continued on a path of self-destruction that ended in my death. Two — choosing to do the work needed to maintain a healthier relationship with myself, no matter how difficult or painful.”
He added, “This album is a story of me starting in a new world I’ve created for myself. One that focuses on health, self-love, positivity, understanding, hard work, and most importantly, second chances. At the end of the day, life is short for all of us. We can’t escape the end, so why not make friends with it and live in a world focused on personal fulfillment.”
Musically, “Might Love Myself” has a strong pop feel, with melodic vocals and a cheerful chorus. It’s one of Beartooth’s softer creations, and that doesn’t include the screaming parts of the song.
“I’m a firm believer that mental health starts with a healthy relationship with the self,” says Xiaomo. “I never believed that self-love would be a part of my life. I would focus on my depression and sadness, trusting that those parts of me were always the most prominent parts of my mind. But through hard work there will be results. Self-love has to be a choice; it can’t be an emotion.”
He continued: “Emotions are fleeting and can change with a sunset or a word. Choosing to make my own health (mentally and physically) a priority in my life is the only way I’ve found self-love. It’s helped me realize what I’m capable of, how strong I am, and that progress is more important than addressing my emotions right away. This song is the first time I realized something major had changed in my life.”
Beartooth recently wrapped up a co-headlining US tour with Trivium. Next, they will head to Australia for a joint tour with Pierce the Veil, followed by a European tour. Tickets for their overseas performances can be purchased here.
