Stereogum named boygenius their inaugural artist of the year for 2023, and shared a new cover story featuring an interview with the band about the massive year they’ve had. Among their questions for the trio was who each would pick as their own artist of the year. Lucy Dacus chose billy woods, saying, “One of the best wordsmiths around right now — I hate that I said the word ‘wordsmith,’ but whatever.” Julien Baker picked Mitski, and said, “That fucking record is a work of inspired genius.” Phoebe Bridgers picked one of their fall tourmates, saying “Palehound. That’s it.”
The interview also touched on Barbenheimer (which Lucy and Julien say the trio dressed up to attend together, but didn’t like either film); the function of modern producers; highlights of their year; Lucy’s presence on Rolling Stone‘s updated list of the greatest guitarists of all time; their love of Bandcamp; and more. Read it in full (and watch a Christmas-themed video of the Phoebe, Lucy, and Julien talking about their favorite seasonal traditions, music, films, and more) on Stereogum.
boygenius recently paid tribute to Sinéad O’Connor with a new benefit rendition of “The Parting Glass” with Ye Vagabonds. Their fantastic 2023 debut LP the record has begun to appear on year end lists as those roll out.
