Brazilian composer and pianist Amaro Freitas has announced new album Y’Y, which will be out March 1 via Sylvan Esso’s Psychic Hotline label. He says album is an “homage to the forest, especially the Amazon Forest, and the rivers of Northern Brazil,” adding it’s “a call to live, feel, respect, and care for nature, recognizing it as our ancestor.” Freitas co-produced the album with Laercio Costa and Vinicius Aquino, and it features contributions from Shabaka Hutchings, Brandee Younger, Jeff Parker, Hamid Drake and Aniel Someillan.
You can hear a flurry of influences on “Encantado,” the album’s closing track, from his Brazilian musical heritage through jazz greats like Chick Corea. The song features Shabaka Hutchings on flute, Hamid Drake on drums, and Aniel Someillan on bass, and is meant to evoke “enchanted spirits of the forest.” Listen to that below.
