Bolis Pupul, the Belgium-based electronic artist and Charlotte Adigéry collaborator, has announced new solo album Letter To Yu, which will be out March 8 via DEEWEE. He made the album with Soulwax‘s Stephen & David Dewaele at the DEEWEE Studios in Ghent.
The album is a love letter to Bolis’ Hong Kong-born mother who was killed in a traffic accident in 2008. “When I started to think about my roots, I started to embrace them. And it became more and more important for me to get in touch with them,” Bolis says. “I went to evening school and began learning Chinese. I did that for four years. That was the first step.”
The album was also inspired by his first visit to Hong Kong in 2018. “On the first day I arrived in the city I visited the street where she was born and wrote her a letter. This letter became the centerpiece of my record. Letter To Yu is an homage to my mother, my grandparents and Hong Kong.”
The first single from the record is “Completely Half,” a simmering slice of slinky synthpop that has him pondering his family tree. The gorgeously shot video, directed by Bieke Depoorter, was filmed in Hong Kong — the album’s cover art is from the same shoot — and you can watch that below.
