So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
CHRIS STAPLETON – “THINK I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU”
“Baby, do you ever wonder whatever happened way back when?” Chris Stapleton is late to realize he has feelings for someone on this soulful, string-laden new single from his upcoming album Higher.

CHVRCHES – “TALKING IN MY SLEEP”
Chvrches are releasing a 10th anniversary of their debut album on October 20 which will include four previously unheard songs. One of those is “Talking in My Sleep.” Says the band’s Iain Cook, “Some of the main sources of inspiration for our first album, including ‘Talking In My Sleep’ were artists that we all share a love for, and a lot of stuff from the 80s. Kate Bush (particularly the Hounds of Love album), Depeche Mode, Prince, Michael Jackson, and also a bunch of the blog-led indie pop music that was around in 2010. Martin particularly was really invested in that stuff and was bringing a lot of fresh sounds and ideas mixed with the classic 80’s pop influences that we all loved.”

METRIC – “WHO WOULD YOU BE FOR ME”
Metric’s new album Formentera II is out next month, and the latest single is “Who Would You Be For Me,” which Emily Haines calls a “throwback lullaby set in NYC in 2002. All the action takes place in Tompkins Square Park, in a subway car, and at the café on St. Marks Place where I worked as a waitress when we were getting our start. Automatic behaviors and patterns are often fairly easy to flag in others but can be a riddle to spot in yourself. In life and in love, all the emphasis in your mind can default to being what someone else wants until it dawns on you to consider your own desire. I could be the girl for you, but who would you be for me?”

GREEN DAY – “WALKING THE DOG,” “CHRISTIE ROAD” & “409 IN YOUR COFFEEMAKER” (DOOKIE OUTTAKES)
As you probably know, Green Day’s Dookie included a re-recorded version of “Welcome to Paradise” from 1992’s Kerplunk, and apparently that wasn’t the only older song they’d re-recorded during those sessions. The upcoming Dookie 30th anniversary box also includes re-recordings of Kerplunk highlight “Christie Road” and “409 In Your Coffeemaker” from 1990’s Slappy EP. Those are out now, along with a cover of Rufus Thomas’ 1963 R&B song “Walking the Dog.” It’s pretty cool to hear those GD classics with Dookie-era production (and, in the case of “409,” Tré Cool on drums), and the cover’s fun too.

OLIVIA BARTON – “I LOVE YOU JUST FOR TRYING”
Olivia and her partner corook’s viral collaboration “If I Were A Fish” is becoming a children’s book, and Olivia has shared a new single, “I Love You Just For Trying.” “I wrote the song ‘I Love You Just For Trying’ before any of the growth and opportunity of the last year was in sight,” she says. “I felt like I was failing myself and everyone who believed in me by not being more successful already. It sounds sort of silly and vain when I say it out loud, but I think it’s actually a feeling a lot of us share. I played it every night on tour with Lizzy McAlpine and had the audiences close their eyes and sing the title line to themselves. Hearing thousands of people say to themselves ‘I love you just for trying’ was unbelievably tender. Although a lot has changed for me since I felt like such a failure – a successful album, a massive tour, and a viral song ‘If I Were a Fish’ – there is also a lot that hasn’t changed. I’m still slowly putting together my team and focusing on building a long lasting career that doesn’t hinge on short term successes.”
