Corinne Bailey Rae just released her fourth album, Black Rainbows, which is also her first in seven years. The album was inspired by objects and art collected by Theaster Gates at the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago. “I knew when I walked through those doors that my life had changed forever,” says Bailey Rae. “Engaging with these archives and encountering Theaster Gates and his practice has changed how I think about myself as an artist and what the possibilities of my work can be. This music has come through seeing. Seeing has been like hearing, for me. While I was looking, songs/sounds appeared.”
If you haven’t checked in with Corinne in a while, Black Rainbows may surprise you. There are still moments of lush orchestration like on her smash 2006 debut, but the album also features more ambitious arrangements and even a couple noisy, punky rock numbers like the infectious “New York Transit Queen.” You can listen below.
Corinne is currently on tour in North America, with shows across the South and Southwest. She’ll be back in early 2024, including a four-night stand at NYC’s Blue Note on February 15-18 with early and late shows each night. All dates are listed below.
