The 2023 Polaris Music Prize was given out at a gala ceremony on Tuesday night in Toronto, and DEBBY FRIDAY‘s GOOD LUCK took home the award, which honors the Best Canadian Album of the Year. She beat out fellow longlist records by Alvvays, Feist, The Sadies, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Daniel Caesar, and more. Congrats, DEBBY!
“I’ve always been a little bit strange, a little bit different from other people, and it’s only in retrospect that I’ve been able to see that this has been a superpower all along,” FRIDAY said accepting the award. “This is actually a gift and, you know, I just want to say that I think it’s very important to protect your strangeness, protect the things that make you different. These are gifts that you’ve been given in this lifetime. And that’s it. I don’t have anything else to say but thank you.” You can watch her accept the Polars Prize, and listen to GOOD LUCK, below.
DEBBY’s only upcoming dates are Chicago’s Sanctum Festival on October 27, and Pitchfork London on November 11.
