In addition to leading Prince Daddy and the Hyena, Kory Gregory has been releasing music under the name Jophus since 2020, and now he’s releasing an album by that project called True Crime. It comes out digitally on March 8 via Counter Intuitive Records, but vinyl is available now so you can get the full LP now if you order a physical copy.
The album is solo in the very literal sense–Kory played, recorded, mixed, and mastered everything himself and did his own artwork–and it includes re-recordings of two of his recent singles (“When Did You Stop?” and “Something Special”), as well as the just-released “I Hear Chimes,” which closes the album. As you hear on “I Hear Chimes,” True Crime is a little more hi-fi than the rickety bedroom pop vibes of the early Jophus singles, but still has plenty of scrappiness and haze. It swirls together breezy acoustic guitars, rung-out electric ones, piano, a more proper drum kit than the early singles, and various other trippy sound effects. Kory tops it off with his unmistakably unique voice, with warm melodies and yearning emotion. Check it out below.
