Devo have a couple film-related events happening this month, one of which is in in NYC: ‘De-Evolution Is Real: The Restored Films of DEVO’ will screen at MoMA on January 27, and the band’s Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh will be there in person. Tickets go on sale January 13 for MoMA members, and go on sale to the general public on January 20.
Gerald Casale has more details: “Negativland alum Peter Conheim has been DEVO’s primary audio/video preservationist & archivist since I tapped him to be a shooter for our live Hardcore concert movie in 2014. A decade ago, we began discussing the restoration of DEVO’s seminal body of music-driven film works. Over the years, Peter’s DEVO related projects have included the short and hilarious ‘Sh!t Happens’ film in 2018, last year’s ‘Mechanical Man’ vinyl EP reissue for Electronic Sound Magazine (UK), and his expert restorations were essential for both of the new DEVO box sets from Rhino Records and Futurismo. And now it can be told — mission accomplished — further proof of concept will be screened at MoMA on 1/27/24!”
Before that, Devo will be in Park City, UT for the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where Chris Smith’s documentary DEVO documentary will get its world premiere. To celebrate, Devo will perform live at Park City’s Marquis on January 22.
