As far as guessing who might be one of the surprise “special guests” at Dinosaur Jr‘s seven-show Music Hall of Williamsburg residency this week, old pal Kurt Vile seems a shoo-in, and anyone who had him on their bingo card scored a square on Saturday, Night 2 of the run. They brought him out to sing on “Crumble,” from the band’s 2007 album Beyond and afterward Kurt told a story of him telling his bandmate Jesse Trbovich about that album at the time, right before being hit by a hit-and-run driver. Kurt then stuck around to cover The Stooges’ “No Fun.”
A guest you might not have been expecting was Gov’t Mule‘s Warren Haynes who they brought out after Kurt and joined the band for The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” and stuck around for “Forget the Swan” (from 1985’s Dinosaur) and finally a cover of Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s “Cortez the Killer” which closed out the main set.
Dinosaur Jr came back for a two-song encore of “Feel the Pain” and “Freak Scene.” The night started, of course, with a full album play of 1993’s Where You Been? whose 30th anniversary is the reason for this residency. You can check out the full setlist from Night 2 and lots of video from the shows — including Kurt and Warren’s guest appearances — below.
Night 1 had Isaac Brock and Hamilton Leithauser as guests.
The Where You Been? residency at MHOW continues tonight, takes Monday off and then continues Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Some tickets are still available.
