Dinosaur Jr wrapped up their seven-night residency at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday night. This has been a 30th anniversary celebration of Where You Been and also an excuse to jam with friends. The special guests this week have been relegated to the second half of the set, but Friday featured appearances during the opening Where You Been portion of the evening: Luluc, who have opened all week, came out for “Get Me,” while TV on the Radio‘s Kyp Malone joined the band on guitar for “Drawerings.”
Kyp was back out at the start of the back half of the set, for “In A Jar,” and Luluc came out again for “Feel the Pain.” That wasn’t it of the final night guests, though. Battles‘ Ian Williams, who was wearing as much day-glo as J. Mascis, was on hand for “Freak Scene,” and The Roots‘ Captain Kirk Douglas joined the band for a cover of the Buddy Miles arrangement of Neil Young’s “Down by the River.”
After the show, Lou Barlow wrote “Down By The River (Buddy Miles version) that honestly felt like the most legit RnR moment of my life, he sang the shit out of it and lead us into Jimi’s Hey Joe coda.. two murder ballads in one!”
Dinosaur Jr closed out the main set on their own with “Gargoyle,” and then returned for an encore of “Tarpit” and The Cure’s Just Like Heaven.” Check out videos from the final night of their Brooklyn residency, along with the setlist, below.
