Toronto duo Ducks Ltd will release their second album, Harm’s Way, on February 9 via Carpark. The band’s Evan Lewis and Dave Mcgreevy co-produced the album with Dave Vettraino, and it features appearances from Ratboys‘ Julia Steiner and Marcus Nuccio, Dehd‘s Jason Bala, Finom’s Macie Stewart and more.
Most of the songs on the new album were written while the band were on tour with Nation of Language, Illuminati Hotties, and Archers of Loaf. “When we got signed, we had played maybe five or six shows ever. After last year, it’s in the hundreds. That experience can change your perception of your own music and songwriting,” says McGreevy. “In the past when we got stuck on a song we had a tendency to look at our favorite records to see how they tackled it. But now, instead of asking ‘what would Orange Juice do?’, we’d ask, ‘what would we do?”
Harm’s Way includes recent single “The Main Thing” and they’ve just shared “Hollowed Out,” another ringing, jangly earworm. “It’s about living with decline,” says McGreevy. “About the feeling that the horizon of possibility in the world is forever being drawn in to align with the edges of the imaginations of a small group of careless rich people. And about existing through a state of ongoing catastrophe over which we have no control.” You can watch the Colin Medley-directed video below.
Ducks Ltd will be in NYC this weekend, playing TV Eye on Saturday (12/2) with The Ophelias and Golden Apples. They’ve also announced record release shows next year in Toronto and Montreal, as well as a London show. All dates are listed below.
