The amazing life and career of composer Ennio Morricone is explored in a new documentary, Ennio, which will be in theaters on February 9. Via Rolling Stone: The documentary, which was made by filmmaker and regular Morricone collaborator Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso) before the Maestro died in 2020, premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival and features exclusive interviews with Morricone, Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, Dario Argento, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Oliver Stone, and Wong Kar-wai, as well as rare and previously unseen footage. Here’s more:
Tornatore’s documentary portrait examines the breadth of the maestro’s career, from his early Italian pop songs to the fistful of unforgettable film scores that he wrote, including THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY, THE THING, DAYS OF HEAVEN, and hundreds of others. Packed with insightful commentary from Morricone’s collaborators and contemporaries, ENNIO affords the master one last chance to recount his career and deconstruct his artistic process.
“I wanted to make Ennio to make Morricone’s story known to audiences all over the world who love his music,” Tornatore says of the film. “It was not just a matter of having him tell me about his life and his magical relationship with music, but also of searching in archives around the world for interviews and other images relating to the innumerable collaborations carried out in the past by Morricone with filmmakers.”
Ennio will screen in NYC at Film Forum starting February 9 (advance tickets are not on sale yet). No word on a streaming release yet. You can watch the trailer below.
