Finom, the Chicago duo of Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart who used to go by the name OHMME, have announced a new album, Not God, which will be out May 24 via Joyful Noise Recordings. The album was produced by Jeff Tweedy at his The Loft studio.
The first single from the album is “Haircut,” a leftfield banger that sounds like a collaboration between The Roches and Devo. The wonderfully weird video was directed by Alex Grelle. “‘Haircut’ was written following the stream of suggested words from Macie’s phone robot,” say Finom. “Somehow this intelligence intuited that we wanted to say ‘no’ more– to control more of our own time. Alex Grelle, one of our favorite artists and collaborators, directed the video for us with a genius group of artists. We were inspired by this strange and beautiful France Gall short film that Jeff and Spencer Tweedy showed us while we were recording.” Watch the video below.
Finom are currently in Japan where they’re opening for Wilco, and have US dates later in March, including Knoxville’s Big Ears festival and shows with V.V. Lightbody. Their schedule also includes a Brooklyn record release show at The Sultan Room on May 31. All dates are listed below.
If you’re wondering about the name change, they wrote last year when announcing it, “There is a long story but the short one is that we had to and we see it as part of our life as a band to evolve every couple of years– kind of like a Pokémon.”
