NJ’s hardcore band for the freaks Gel were everywhere this year. They released their great debut full-length Only Constant in March on Convulse Records, and toured endlessly with a vast array of different bands, including Drain, Thursday, Screaming Females, and Gorilla Biscuits. They’ve already got a lot on their calendar for 2024 too, including a benefit show in Rhode Island with Fiddlehead and Verbal Assault on 1/4, Sick New World, Sonic Temple, Primavera Sound, Hellfest, and more.
With the year coming to a close, we asked Gel what their favorite albums of 2023 were, and guitarist Anthony Webster responded with a list that includes their Convulse labelmates MSPAINT (who also had Gel on their list), Hotline TNT, Spiritual Cramp, Nuovo Testamento, Initiate, Taking Meds, and more, with commentary on each pick. Read on for what Anthony had to say.

Anthony Webster’s (Gel) 10 Favorite Albums of 2023
MSPAINT – Post American
If you know me or us at all, this isn’t surprising. MSPAINT is a band doing something fully unique and in a way that feels truly honest. The record sounds great, and they sound even better live.
Hotline TNT – Cartwheel
Nineteen in Love was my AOTY in 2021. So naturally this is one of my favorites of this year. The songs feel nostalgic. The guitar playing is creative. The production is perfect.
Spiritual Cramp – Spiritual Cramp
There’s never been a band more cool than Spiritual Cramp.
Nuovo Testamento – Love Lines
Some of the best songs I’ve ever heard are on this record. “Heartbeat” is a 10/10.
Pest Control – Don’t Test The Pest
Riffs
Spy – Satisfaction
Spy never disappoints
Hook-Ups – 3d
This record got played on repeat in the van all summer
Initiate – Cerebral Circus
Not putting this on here because we’re on tour with them, actually we’re just on tour with them because I love this record so much. The guitar playing is melodic and creative yet still heavy
Pardoner – Peace Loving People
Same with Initiate, I heard this record and needed to play some shows together.
Taking Meds – Dial M For Meds
Our friends made a record I wish everybody would listen to. So do it.
