Green Day‘s upcoming stadium tour was already announced as celebrations of the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot, and now they’ve explained what that means: they’ll be playing both albums in full at the shows.
“What a fuckin’ moment it’s going to be,” Mike Dirnt told Rolling Stone in a new interview. “We’ve never done anything like this before. And there’s a really good chance we’ll never do it again.” In addition to the two albums, they’ll also have “35 to 45 minutes to throw down on other stuff,” presumably including a few songs from their new album, Saviors, which is out this week.
They haven’t figured out all the details yet, though, like which album they’re going to play first. “We still need to put our heads down and do real work to figure that out,” Dirnt told RS. “Before every tour, we do a lot of pre-production, a lot of thinking about how it should look and feel and sound, because it really matters to us. That’s the fun, but it also really keeps us on our toes.”
The tour kicks off July 29 in Washington, DC and they’ll be joined by Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and The Linda Lindas at most stops. The NYC show is at Citi Field on August 5.
Green Day are currently in NYC, where they busked at the Rockefeller Center subway station on Tuesday night with Jimmy Fallon, and will play Irving Plaza on Thursday.
