Harm’s Way have announced their fifth studio album, common suffering, released September 29 by Metal Blade. The Chicago hardcore band also shared lead single and record opener “Silent Wolf.”
The song is Harm’s Way’s first new soundtrack since 2018, and it’s an overwhelming comeback. Pounding drums and furious riffs offer no respite; meanwhile, vocalist James Pligge ramps up the attack with a gruff, guttural delivery of politically charged lyrics.
“‘Silence of the Wolf’ was born out of the observation of the continuing mistrust in our current cultural climate of institutions of governance and systems of power,” Pligg said in a press release. The belief, or lack thereof, in these systems, and the overall inertia and paranoia about how the status quo operates…leads many to ask the question: ‘What really tells us about reality?’”
Although Silent Wolf falls into the hardcore/metalcore template usually associated with Harm’s Way, common suffering Also see the band embrace quieter moments, taking songs in unexpected directions. The LP was recorded at Studio 4 in Pennsylvania with hit producer Will Yip (Turnstile, Code Orange).
“We really tried not to pick parts,” says guitarist Nick Gauthier. “Sometimes the direction we’re taking in songs feels too obvious…We’re just going to work on that until we’re creatively happy with the direction we’re taking.”
