IDLES have shared the video for “Grace,” the poppiest moment on their great fifth album, TANGK. If the video looks familiar, it’s because it’s Coldplay‘s video for their 2000 breakthrough hit “Yellow,” now with Chris Martin lip-syncing to Joe Talbot’s vocals via deepfake technology.
The idea came to Talbot in a dream and he managed to get ahold of Chris, who not only gave IDLES his permission to use the “Yellow” video but also helped the AI to do a better job with the lip-synch. It’s uncanny and dreamlike and you can watch it below.
We talked to IDLES guitarist Mark Bowen, and when asked about “Grace,” he brought up Coldplay. “That stuff is so hard to write without it sounding super cheesy,” he told us. “I have so much deference for your Coldplay, your The National, people that write that kind of music.” Read the whole interview here.
