Pulp were in Asia to play Hong Kong’s Clockenflap Festival on Saturday, but they almost didn’t, as Jarvis Cocker broke two ribs when he fell down a staircase in Kowloon. Luckily, doctors at the hospital fixed up Jarvis, who turned 60 this year, “so I could still do the show.”
Unlike when he fell out a window in the ’80s and had to perform in a wheelchair, Jarvis was standing and playing guitar on a few songs for the show. Emma Smith, who plays in the current lineup of Pulp (and Jarvis’ solo band JARV IS…) noted “he wasn’t supposed to dance but he couldn’t help a few wiggles and put on a great show. What a pro.” The Clockenflap set was truncated just a bit — “Like a Friend” and “Underwear” were on the printed setlist but not played — but they played “Disco 2000,” “Babies,” “I Spy,” “Sorted for E’s & Wizz,” “This is Hardcore” and more before finishing with “Common People.” Watch video below.
Pulp’s next show is New Year’s Eve in Edinburgh which should give Jarvis a little time to heal up, and they have a few 2024 festival dates lined up already including Primavera Sound Barcelona. Will they come to North America? Fingers crossed.
