Following last year’s SZA collaboration “NO SZNS,” genre shapeshifter Jean Dawson is back with a new EP called Boohoo.
The project’s three cuts — “New Age Crisis,” “Divino Desmadre,” and “Taste Like Metal” — serve as an overture to the trilogy that he began last year and see him continue to stretch his limits. “Divino Desmadre,” in particular, marks the first time he’s released a full song in Spanish, which honors his roots crossing the border between Tijuana and San Diego to attend school and speaks to people who live on the fringes.

“I spent a lot of that time listening to music more as a distraction than as a means of feeling anything,” he told us last year. “I needed a distraction because I was waking up at 4 o’clock in the morning as a child. It’s not ‘woe is me’ but more like that just was the circumstance that I lived in to get to school by 8 o’clock. I’ve had an experience for four hours of the day that kids could never imagine.”
Later this year, Dawson will perform at Mexico’s Ceremonia festival in March, where he’ll debut “Divino Desmadre” and will appear on several dates of Lil Yachty’s Field Trip tour. In the meantime, listen to the Boohoo EP below.
