The Daily Show has not had a permanent host since Trevor Noah left the desk last year, but they’ve now found someone: Jon Stewart, who knows something about it as he hosted the Comedy Central satirical news show before Noah from 1999 – 2015.
There are couple caveats. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stewart agreed to return on Mondays only, and this gig is specifically for the 2024 election season. He will, however, be involved in the other nights as well as an executive producer. Jon’s first show back in the anchor chair will be February 12.
“Jon Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season,” said Chris McCarthy, President/CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, in a statement. “In our age of staggering hypocrisy and performative politics, Jon is the perfect person to puncture the empty rhetoric and provide much-needed clarity with his brilliant wit.”
The other nights of the week, The Daily Show will be hosted by current correspondents including Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta and Dulcé Sloan.
The Daily Show featured a series of guest hosts after Noah’s departure, including Hasan Minhaj and Kal Penn (both of whom were reportedly in talks to take over as permanent host), Al Franken, Wanda Sykes, Leslie Jones, Sarah Silverman, D.L. Hughley, Chelsea Handler, and more.
After his 16-year stint at the The Daily Show, Jon Stewart went to Apple TV+ to host The Problem, but left after the second season due to creative differences between him and the iPhone makers.
Trevor Noah, meanwhile, is still on his extensive Off the Record tour.
