Back in 2021, Joyce Manor played their self-titled album in full in Central Park, and they were supposed to have Tigers Jaw open, but Tigers Jaw had to drop off after the show was rescheduled due to weather, so Joyce Manor made up for it by covering “I Saw Water” in their encore. Now, they’ve released a split with Tigers Jaw featuring the live recording of that very moment on one side and a newly-recorded studio version of Tigers Jaw covering “Constant Headache” on the other. the 7″ is up for pre-order now via Epitaph/Hopeless, and both songs are streaming now.
I was at the Central Park show, and the “I Saw Water” cover was an unexpectedly awesome moment that hearing this recording brings me right back to, and Tigers Jaw’s “Constant Headache” cover is great too. They stay pretty faithful to the original but give it that Tigers Jaw spin, with Ben Walsh handling most of the lead vocals and Brianna Collins taking over for the song’s iconic bridge.
“I got the idea to cover the song for the people who were disappointed Tigers Jaw wouldn’t be playing and it ended up being my favorite moment of a very memorable set,” said Joyce Manor’s Barry Johnson via press release. “I’m so happy it was captured by our sound guy Ty and that we didn’t have to go into the recording studio and try to recapture the magic of this performance. It’s truly one of my favorite songs ever and one of my favorite Joyce Manor recordings. Hope you enjoy it :)”
Listen to both covers below, along with a video for Joyce Manor’s cover featuring live footage from that Central Park show. Tigers Jaw also covered “Constant Headache” live in NJ earlier this week and you can watch fan-shot video of that below too.
