So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
ANNA CALVI – “BLACK TUESDAY”
Anna Calvi has stayed busy the last few years composing music for television series Peaky Blinders and will release Season 5 & 6 (Original Score) on January 26 via Domino. Amongst the instrumental themes are new versions of Nick Cave’s “Red Right Hand” which is the show’s theme song, and new original Calvi songs. You can listen to one of those, “Black Tuesday,” now.

HORSEGIRL X LIFEGUARD – “I WANNA BE ADORED” (STONE ROSES COVER, LIVE)
Chicago bands Horsegirl and Lifeguard, who have some filial connections between them, recently taped a live session for Unacceptable Color which is curated by photographer Shawn Brackbill, Get Up Kids Rob and Ryan Pope, and the band Sweeping Promises. They collaborated on this cover of The Stone Roses’ classic single “I Wanna Be Adored.”

HARP (EX-MIDLAKE) – “CHRYSTALS”
Harp, the new project from former Midlake frontman Tim Smith, will release their debut album, Albion, tomorrow and here’s one more taste before you get to hear the whole thing. “Chrystals” is clearly from the same person who gave us “Roscoe” but now coats things in an ’80s goth sheen (think Cocteau Twins).

LACK OF AFRO – “GO FREE”
Adam Gibbons has been making chilled out, cinematic, hip hop inspired music as Lack of Afro since the mid-’00s and has just released the very ’70s-sounding, horn-powered “Go Free” as the new single from new album Square One.

LILY SEABIRD – “CAVITY”
Lily Seward, who plays in Empty Country and Greg Freeman’s bands, makes music as Lily Seabird and will release new album Alas on January 12. “Cavity” is haunting folk that gets cut with a little skronky sax and blistering guitar.

ARONE DYER X S T A R G A Z E – “SUGAR FRIEND”
ARONE x S T A R G A Z E, featuring Buke & Gase’s Arone Dryer collaborating with classic-contemporary ensemble s t a r g a z e, is out this Friday (12/1), and they’ve shared a final advance single, “Sugar Friend,” which Dyer says “is about a friend’s entitlement, and how I tried to sugarcoat our experience to maintain a friendship despite being taken for granted. I became the scapegoat for their broadly lived frustrations, the whipping post, thinking I was helping them to vent. Not true! Never let a friend abuse you. ‘You made a bitter plan, better than meeting me in plain sight, like I was blind before you turned on the light.’ That’s the shit there, when a friend treats you like you’re so lucky to have them, in a way that squashes your autonomy. ‘Since you left, my right eye seems no different than the glowing moon’ refers to my inner truths, who I know myself to be, that I am a good a loving friend, and this person basically claimed I was wrong about myself, that I was actually not a good person and they were going to fix me. Which is bullshit. IYKYK. ‘We still hunger for caramel licks of each other, Wouldn’t it be sweet if sugar was all we needed’ – We just couldn’t find the love after all of that. It was a shame, to me. I still think about them and wish them well.”

GENESIS OWUSU – “SURVIVOR”
Genesis Owusu follows up his great new album Struggler with another lively, genre-defying single, “Survivor.”

CHUCK STRANGERS – “A FORSAKEN LOVER’S PLEA”

ALKALINE TRIO – “BAD TIME”
Alkaline Trio have shared the second single from their upcoming album Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, which will be their first since Matt Skiba left blink-182 and last with longtime drummer Derek Grant. It’s a crunchy, catchy power-pop song that feels like classic Alkaline Trio and sounds fresh today too.

PAULA COLE – “THE REPLACEMENTS & DINOSAUR JR”
Singer-songwriter and Dawson’s Creek theme song creator Paula Cole is usually not mentioned in the same breath as alt-rock faves The Replacements and Dinosaur Jr, but now they are thanks to Cole’s new song, which is unexpectedly titled “The Replacements & Dinosaur Jr.” The song is the first single from Lo, Cole’s first album in a decade, and is a heartfelt tribute to her friend and mentor Mark Hutchins, who died in 2016 at age 51.

KIRIN J CALLINAN – “CRAZIER IDEA”
Kirin J Callinan’s new single feels sonically straight out of 1985, somewhere between Prefab Sprout and Trevor Horn, featuring sampled orchestra hits, serious keytar action, and Kirin’s bravado-laden vocals. It’s pretty terrific. New album If I Could Sing is out February 2.
