Saturday night, KISS played the final date of their Farewell Tour, their second consecutive night at Madison Square Garden. While former members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss did not make an appearance, at the end of the show KISS announced they would continue to rock and roll all night and party every day as digital avatars.
“KISS Army, your love and your power has made us immortal,” a digital Paul Stanley exclaimed to the crowd in a video. “The new KISS era starts now!” The new era KISS avatars then performed their cover of Argent’s “God Gave Rock & Roll to You.” You can watch video of that below.
The digital versions were created by Pophouse, the same Swedish company that created the ABBA Voyage virtual experience, along with George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic. “We can be forever young and forever iconic by taking us to places we’ve never dreamed of before,” Gene Simmons said in a press release announcing this. “The technology is going to make Paul jump higher than he’s ever done before.” Paul Stanley adds: “What we’ve accomplished has been amazing, but it’s not enough. The band deserves to live on because the band is bigger than we are.”
It’s unclear whether this new virtual KISS will include Frehley and Criss, or whether it will just be the Starchild and Catman personas. We also don’t know where virtual KISS will perform. (Vegas?)
