Chicago pop punks Knuckle Puck have announced a new album, Losing What We Love, due October 20 via Pure Noise (pre-order). The album was made with longtime producer Seth Henderson, and the band says it’s one of the most collaborative records they made since their early days, and they did more in-studio writing for this album than they ever had before. It also finds Knuckle Puck taking on a darker tone lyrically, as co-lead singer Nick Casasanto explains:
For a long time, we felt a responsibility to have this overwhelming hopefulness to our lyrics. This time around, we started writing more honestly with less intent to sound cool or hopeful. It feels like we’re in a bit of a losing battle with the state of the world, but in the past we’d say, ‘Oh, but it’s all OK!’ Now we’re saying, ‘No, we should be panicking.’ This record feels like more of an expression than a motivational speech.
Judging by lead single “Groundhog Day” (which came out last fall) and the just-released “The Tower,” the darker tone also comes through in the music. These songs are full of moments that embrace the band’s harder, grittier side, and also still full of melody and atmosphere.
About “The Tower,” the band says, “‘The Tower’ is a song about welcoming the inevitability of death, destruction and chaos. The world is bleak right now and this song is a reflection of that. It shows a darker side of our band than what we have let people see in recent years which was a big reason for choosing it as a single.” Watch the video below.
Knuckle Puck are also gearing up for a co-headlining tour with Real Friends, which includes support from Arm’s Length (who just dropped a new single) and One Step Closer (whose Songs for the Willow EP came out earlier this year). That hits NYC on December 9 at Irving Plaza. All dates are listed below.
Knuckle Puck also recently released a Third Eye Blind cover from Pure Noise and PBR’s upcoming Dead Formats: Vol. 2 covers comp.
