La Luz have announced a new album, News of the Universe, which will be out May 24 via Sub Pop. It’s their first record for the label after four albums on subsidiary Hardly Art, and they made it with producer Maryam Qudus (Spacemoth), who has now joined the band as a full-time member.
News of the Universe was born out of tumult. It’s the band’s first album to feature new drummer Audrey Johnson and the last to feature bassist Lena Simon and keyboardist Alice Sandahl, who left the group after making it. For bandleader Shana Cleveland, the time in between albums has been especially difficult, facing a breast cancer diagnosis just two years after giving birth to her first child.
“It’s been a strange and difficult few years, and at moments, I have found myself rushing to move forward in time, to leave the present and escape to whatever is next,” says Cleveland, who is currently cancer-free, of “Strange World,” the album’s new-wavey first single. “The best advice a friend gave me during a time when I was feeling particularly overwhelmed and battling consecutive panic attacks was to go outside, take my shoes off, and sit with my feet on the earth. This seemed to slow the universe down in a way that made it feel easier to handle. So this chorus is something of a mantra to myself ‘we’ll be fine, just take your time.’” You can watch the video for “Strange World” below.
The new lineup of La Luz will go on tour this fall, including a Brooklyn show at Elsewhere Hall on October 9. Tickets for all fall dates go on sale Friday, March 8 at 10 AM.
