So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

Jenn Champion’s new solo album The Last Night of Sadness is out this Friday, and she’s given us one last early taste, moody synthpop track “GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS (we’re all gonna die).” “This song has always been about how hard it can be to stay alive, stay healthy, get through whatever it you are trying to get through and how death is so scary but also this release,” she says. “Around the time I was working on it a friend’s kid, maybe 5 years old, was sitting at the dinner table as everyone was eating pizza and out of nowhere he said, ‘good news, bad news everybody – we’re all gonna die.’ and when I heard that I just thought, yes – exactly.”

LAND OF TALK – “SITCOM”
Land of Talk’s new album is out this week and here’s one last preview before you can hear the whole thing. “A lot of my love of music is just from long car rides with my dad listening to Christopher Cross, Fine Young Cannibals, and Whitney Houston,” says Elizabeth Powell. “He’s not a musician but I feel like I’m almost having a conversation with my dad through a lot of my records. Recently, I got into a really big Christopher Cross phase. On this song, I thought I could try to write like that. I was also watching a lot of Family Ties and older sitcoms. The keys part kind of evoked that classic TV intro from the ‘70s and ‘80s.”

SARAH JAROSZ – “COLUMBUS & 89TH”
“New York signified this childhood dream that I’d had for so long, so moving to Nashville was like turning the page from youth to adulthood,” Sarah Jarosz says. “‘Columbus & 89th’ ended up just pouring out of me once Daniel Tashian and I started working on it—there was so much nostalgia and melancholy that I needed to process, and now I still tear up whenever I hear it. As a songwriter my main goal is to tell the truth about my experience, and I think the fact that that song makes me so emotional means that I was tapping into a real feeling.” It’s from her new album Polaroid Lovers.

BAD COP/BAD COP – “SAFE AND LEGAL”

Our ongoing effort is to remove legal restrictions and integrate them as a routine medical procedure. It’s a private healthcare matter, plain and simple.”

LAUREN MAYBERRY (CHVRCHES) – “SHAME”
“I had the idea for a while of a song that had the tagline of ‘what a shame,’ but in a sarcastic way,” CHVRCHES’ Lauren Mayberry says of her second solo single. “And the word ‘shame’ having a double meaning – the shame you feel and internalize, but what a shame you feel like that and can’t change it. Looking back on a lot of my life in terms of relationships, sexuality and my sense of self in the world, there is a lot of shame associated with that. I came into my teens in the early-mid 2000s, a time period we now regard as a bit of a shithole in terms of gender and media messages (post Woodstock 99, the dawn of sex tape leaks, Girls Gone Wild, etc, etc). What was deemed ‘attractive’ for women and girls was quite disturbing in hindsight, and that’s what went into my brain at a formative time, romanticizing bargain basement, local band boy versions of Reality Bites Ethan Hawke. But now I know better, my wiring is still to find those things attractive on a cellular level. I know not to want those things academically, but emotionally, romantically, sexually, I have been trained to find those things valuable and attractive. I know you are what you eat and it’s the taste that keeps me tame.”
—
END – “THAW” (ft. HERIOT’S DEBBIE GOUGH)

Feelings of loneliness, but also a strange comfort in the harmony and wonder of nature, tucked in amongst the seaweed, kelp and brine. ‘I found out everything, everything I needed to know, everything I was, everything I is.’”
—
BLACK PUMAS – “ANGEL”
“I remember feeling overwhelmed by everything going on with my family and the neighborhood I was living in and hoping to find sanctuary in the actual voice of an angel,” Black Pumas’ Eric Burton says of their new single. “There was a laundromat nearby that served as a quiet place for me, and that song started to come to me as I stared into a still-life painting of flowers.” The video was shot at iconic LA hotel Chateau Marmont and the band’s new album, Chronicles of a Diamond, is out October 27.
