The Lemonheads released new single “Fear of Living” back in November — the first taste of the band’s anticipated first new album of originals in nearly 20 years — and now they’ve shared its b-side. It’s a not a Dando original, but instead a cover of “Seven Out” by Eugenius, the post-Vaselines band from Eugene Kelly who were originally named Captain America before running afoul of Marvel Comics’ legal department. The song also appeared on Kelly’s 2003 solo album, Man Alive.
“Mac from Superchunk made me a tape of The Vaselines and The Louvin Brothers when we stayed with him on our first real tour in 1987,” says Evan Dando. “Eugene’s band Captain America played their first show with us in Glasgow (with Brendan from Teenage Fanclub on drums) in 1990. We did a lot of touring with Eugenius in the early 90’s (no longer Captain America after Marvel Comics threatened to sue). I’ve always LOVED this song since it came out on a Eugene solo single. I’ve finally covered it!” Listen to The Lemonheads’ version of “Seven Out”, and Kelly’s solo version, below.
