Lush founder guitarist Emma Anderson has announced her debut solo album, pearl. The project will arrive via Sonic Cathedral on October 20, while lead single “Bend the Round” is out now.
Anderson began to write what was to come pearl Travel back in time to around 2016, when Lush briefly reunited. In fact, these songs are for the footwear pioneers. “I think we’ve been working together for a long time, so some of those songs — or even just parts of them — were actually meant for Lush,” Anderson explained in a statement. “That didn’t happen, so I don’t know what to do with those songs and pieces of music.”
It took a lot for the songwriters to make a solo record, especially the lead vocals. However, after Anderson’s frequent collaborator, Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins, declined to contribute unless she agreed to jump ship, pearl Started in earnest. “I’m not one to feel comfortable in the spotlight, so for me, being center stage was a big leap, metaphorically speaking,” the artist said.
Instead of forming another traditional four-piece rock band, Anderson hired electronic producer James Chapman to provide keyboards, synthesizers and programming (although Suede’s Richard Oakes did help on guitar). The result is a more textured, modern production, though “Bend the Round” still has Lush’s classic ethereal quality. However, at this point, this appears to be just Anderson’s constant. Take a look below.
Earlier this month, Lush announced the re-release of three of their studio albums on vinyl. Pre-orders are underway.
