During his 11-year career so far, Mike DeMarco The question is often asked: how weird can a musician be while remaining popular? As far as he was concerned, the answer was rather odd. Mac remains a beloved eccentric in the indie world, his music has room for slack, and his captivating theatricality doesn’t come more than in his live performances.Mac wraps up a three-night show at Webster Hall on Thursday night (July 20) as part of a dozen-dozen tour in support of his 2023 instrumental record Five Easy Hot Dogs. Fittingly, his first part is entirely instrumental, with Mack delivering interludes and monologues in a transatlantic accent and bantering with the band and audience in between songs in his normal voice. “what is Five Easy Hot Dogs? I don’t fucking know … we’re trying to do something new, which is cool,” he said early on in the show.
Mike DeMarco played non-stop for over two hours; that journey began with Five Easy Hot Dogs The whole show ends with “Rockaway,” to the delight of the audience. Named after the neighborhood where Mac lived for many years (and invited fans to “My Waterside Home”), Mac introduced “Rockaway” and credited his old roommate Matt Voles for all the eclectic decor on the stage. Throughout the night, he played acoustic guitar on a rotating stool (on which he sang vocal songs), along with bass, keys and drums, surrounded by ephemeral things: a giant teal horse, rugs, lamps, dried flowers and the New York Lottery neon sign center stage. Behind the band are lightly psychedelic visuals by Dan McNeil, 8-bit smiley faces and a vaporwave-like stock video.
Follow easy-sounding folk-rock Five Easy Hot Dogs, the Mac delivered hits, starting with the early favorite “Salad Days.”The second half includes an anthology of another of his 2023 projects wayne g one — “Proud Toyota,” “She Wants a Sandwich,” “Scarecrow,” and more. The audience thundered and cheered throughout the show, especially “Another One” (Mike asked to wave a flashlight), “Still Beating” and the hit “Chamber Of Reflection” (the first of two encore songs). In fact, when he took the stage after a 30-second hiatus, Mike joked, “Encore is a piece of shit. We’re going to do two more shows and then we’re off.” He closed the night with a jam-packed, solo-filled “Still Together,” showing the band’s musical prowess beyond wacky, jazzy indie-folk.
No matter what the song was, no matter its lyrical content or tempo, the room erupted in applause after each song throughout the night. Mac DeMarco is still a staunch indie weirdo, and he’s beloved for it.
