Philly punks Mannequin Pussy have released a new single, “I Got Heaven.” It was produced by John Congleton, and a press release says it’s “the first taste of new music by the band, with more on the way soon.” Vocalist/guitarist Marisa Dabice says:
“I Got Heaven” is a song intended to merge the sacred and the profane and to serve as a reminder that we are all perfect exactly as we have been made and that no one gets to decide how a life should or should not be lived. Heaven is here on a planet that gave us everything we needed to survive. Heaven is in the plants and in the water and in the animals who we share this world with. Heaven is inside of me and inside of you. The weaponization of Christianity for political means, for individual profit and power, as a tool to intentionally divide us is one of the greatest threats to our modern world and a threat to our ability to find solidarity through love. To allow the hatred and the violence and the noise to rise is to reject our sacred purpose as individuals, which is simply to love.
The song moves from climactic, shouted post-hardcore to ethereal, dreamy indie rock, and it comes with a video (directed by Mason Mercer and Anthony Miralles) shot in a cornfield and starring a demonic, nearly-nude Marisa Dabice that plays off the song’s themes. Check it out below.
Mannequin Pussy are also gearing up for a tour supporting Movements, alongside Softcult and Heart To Gold. That hits NYC on September 27 at Brooklyn Steel. All dates are listed below.
The band also launched their own new label, Romantic Records, after buying back the masters to their earlier material from their former label Tiny Engines. Along with the announcement, they launched vinyl pre-orders for their long-out-of-print 2016 sophomore album Romantic. The band writes:
We are so proud to announce the beginning of our very own record label imprint: Romantic Records. Near the end of last year our former record label, Tiny Engines, graciously allowed us the opportunity to buy back our masters. Huge thanks to Tiny Engines – first for being among our first supporters and for their early belief in our music and secondly for giving us this opportunity.
This WEDNESDAY August 23rd at 12 EST we will be launching pre-orders on our website for a limited amount of Romantic vinyls – long out of print and printed by Romantic Records for the very first time! 3 color options will be available as well as a temporary return of a classic MP shirt.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of our musical lives and who has loved and supported this record. It’s so meaningful to us every time someone tags us in their cover of “romantic” or let’s us know they just discovered and connected to the album for the first time. We’re so excited to continue to show you what we’ve been busy working on.
The new single is out via Epitaph. Stay tuned for more.
