Marnie Stern has shared the single “Believing Is Seeing,” another preview of The Comeback Kid — her first new album in a decade.
“Believing Is Seeing” begins with a one-note guitar riff that, for a second, sounds a bit like if the intro to Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps” had just crushed a Red Bull. But soon enough, the song becomes entirely Stern’s own as she proclaims its opening lines: “This place is cold!/ I can’t hear you!”
In a press release, Stern said that “‘Believing Is Seeing’ is about trying to build a world of music through different sounds, and how you can create your own cohesive universe through these sounds.” You can almost hear her build her own universe as the two-minute song evolves from an eerie monotone to a technicolor blast, throwing in some rigid chords along the way as if to keep herself from spinning out of control entirely.

Stern’s last studio album was 2013’s The Chronicles of Marnia. She initially previewed The Comeback Kid with the lead single “Plain Speak.” The new album’s out November 3rd.
