Metallica wrapped up the first North American weekend of their massive M72 World Tour, which has them doing “No Repeat Weekends” with “2 Nights. 2 Different Sets. 2 Different Opening Acts. In the Round,” at East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium on Sunday (8/6). Friday’s show was opened by Pantera and Mammoth WVH, with Prong playing a show in the stadium parking lot beforehand, and on Sunday it was Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills providing support, plus a pre-show parking lot set from Overkill. Both nights had a packed house in the venue that holds approximately 80,000 people.
Like Friday’s, Sunday’s Metallica set included three songs from Metallica’s new album 72 Seasons, “Lux Æterna,” “Too Far Gone?” (its live debut), and “You Must Burn!” Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo did another midset instrumental “jam,” this one called “Murf Da Surf” that was dedicated to Long Branch, NJ where Rob said he loved the surfing. There were again beach balls, and the band played plenty of classics, including “Whiplash,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Sanitarium,” “Ride the Lightning,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and more. The end of the show was especially powerful with “Blackened” into their “Whiskey in the Jar” cover into “One” into “Enter Sandman.” They again ended the encore-less show by giving little speeches to the crowd about how much they appreciate the fans.
