After releasing her fantastic new album The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We earlier this month, Mitski has been playing it in full at intimate venues in Europe, the UK, and North America, for a series of acoustic performances she’s dubbed Amateur Mistake. She stopped in NYC on Tuesday night (9/26) for a set at Town Hall (considerably smaller than her last NYC shows at Radio City Music Hall in July of 2022), where after an opening set from Mary Lattimore, she played her new album in full from beginning to end. In contrast to her high-concept, dance-heavy most recent tours, it was a treat to see a pared back performance hearkened back to her earlier shows.
After the album play-through, Mitski broke out a few older songs — “Francis Forever,” “I Bet on Losing Dogs,” “Love Me More,” and “A Pearl” — encouraging the crowd to sing along. For an encore, she did a solo rendition of Puberty 2 track “A Burning Hill,” followed by an extra song not printed on the tracklist that she also hadn’t done in LA last week, a cover of Pete Seeger’s “Coyote, My Little Brother.”
