So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
SLAUGHTER BEACH, DOG – “SUMMER WINDOWS”
Slaughter Beach, Dog’s latest preview of Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling is “Summer Windows,” a warm, rustic alt-country song with a lyrical nod to Townes Van Zandt.

COURTNEY BARNETT – “DIFFERENT NOW” (CHASTITY BELT COVER)
“This song is so special to me,” Courtney Barnett says of Chastity Belt’s “Different Now” which she covered to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of CB’s No Regerts. “I remember when the album came out and I listened to ‘different now’ over and over, I thought they were singing directly to me. It’s a perfect piece of songwriting, I showed it to Kurt [Vile] and he would always sing it to me on tour. I love Chastity Belt. I’m pretty sure we met in 2014 at a record store in Seattle, then we toured together in 2015 and we’ve been friends ever since. I originally played it as a little folk acoustic version, then I asked Stella [Mozgawa] to program some drums and it turned into something a lot more fun. we tracked straight to the Tascam 388 and it was a real joy to make.”

MJ LENDERMAN – “KNOCKIN”
“I was spending a lot of time watching John Daly videos and came across a rendition he does of Dylan’s ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,’” MJ Lenderman says. “Daly’s version includes an extra verse about golfing. My ‘Knockin’ became a staple of the MJ Lenderman & The Wind live set and it felt like a good idea to re-record it professionally.” The impassioned alt-country track is his second single for ANTI-, where he signed in July.

TAKING MEDS – “LIFE SUPPORT”
Taking Meds have shared the third single off their upcoming LP Dial M For Meds, and this one finds them putting the Meds twist on some Dinosaur Jr-esque jangle punk.

THE ARMED – “LIAR 2”
The Armed’s anticipated new album Perfect Saviors is out later this month, and the latest single is “Liar 2,” which has their maximalist tendencies in full effect. “We tend to be drawn to juxtaposition and trying to make disparate things fit in new ways to discover some novel aesthetic resonance or emotional response,” Tony Wolski says. “Some push and pull. This is a dancey, happy track about being in the deepest pits of despair and giving way to lies and delusion as your only means of survival. It is a chocolate cake full of broken glass — the sonics of the track itself, seemingly in denial of the lyrical content.”

INTERNET LOVE SCAM (mem FORESTS) – “DOES SHE LOVE THE DEVIL MORE THAN JAZZ?”
Singapore’s Internet Love Scam share a member with the emo band Forests, but this band goes more in the sasscore direction, and their debut single “Does She Love the Devil More Than Jazz?” is delightfully, awesomely chaotic.

THE REDS, PINKS & PURPLES – INNER RICHMOND EP
Glenn Donaldson’s The Reds, Pinks & Purples keep up their prolific reputation with this instrumental EP. “This was intended as a soundtrack for a stroll around my neighborhood, the Inner Richmond of San Francisco, or just some background for whatever you feel like doing,” says Glenn.

KING KHAN – “NEVER HOLD BACK / NEVER HOLD ON”
King Khan has shared two more pieces from his soundtrack to documentary The Invaders which is out next week (8/18) via Ernest Jennings Record Co. “While in Germany recording with King Khan we had a late night of sharing music and drinking German beer,” says King Kahn of “Nvever Hold Back” which features Miranda Zipse of Miranda and the Beat . He showed me the Invaders soundtrack and I really connected with the song “Never Hold On.” We got excited and decided to lay down a vocal track for fun. While recording I got really into the power of the song and sang the lyrics “never hold back” instead. We decided it brought a whole new meaning to the track and thought it would be cool to release an alternate version. The lyrics to this song are very close to my heart and I had so much fun bringing new life to it.”

THE NATVRAL – “SUMMER OF HELL”
Says Kip Berman of his new The Natvral single “Summer of Hell”: “Rich kids slum it, young adults cling to the costume of youth, day and night are just different reasons to draw the blinds, impetuous love turns to rancor, and a faint yellow cloud of decadent penury settles upon a crumbling shared rental. You won’t be getting your security deposit back. Friends go and come and go again, and there’s a fellow hanging about called “the doctor” that no medical board would rightly certify. It only ends when pantomimed tragedy gives way to the real deal– or the season changes.” The Natvral’s new album Summer of No Light is out September 1.
