Model/Actriz released their fantastic debut album, Dogsbody, back in February, and it’s been showing up on plenty of year end lists. As 2023 draws to a close, we’ve been asking artists to tell us about their favorite music of the year, and Cole Haden, Jack Wetmore, Aaron SHapiro, and Ruben Radlauer each contributed to a list of albums. Read that, along with their commentary, below.
Model/Actriz have a couple of holiday shows lined up this week: they’re throwing the third edition of their “A Very Model/Actriz Chismukkah” on December 13 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Current Joys and Swami Sound; get tickets now. The next night, they’ll support Interpol at Beacon Theatre for the second of their hometown holiday shows.
MODEL/ACTRIZ’S FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 2023
JACK’S PICKS
Zach Bryan – Zach Bryan
Taylor Swift for the males. I’m obsessed with this Oklahoma man. Every song is a hit.
Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer & Shahzad Ismaily – Love in Exile
Best supergroup. Got to see them in Iowa City in the midst of our hectic Fall tour and it was phenomenal. I love them so much.
AARON’S PICKS
Bickle – Biblickle
Incredibly catchy and earnest songwriting. I listened to this on repeat while we were on our second US tour this year.
Purelink – Signs
I like to throw this on while I’m reading or taking the train. Such a delicate record.
MIKE / Wiki / The Alchemist – Faith Is a Rock
The mayor’s a cop.
COLE’S PICKS
DJ Gigola – Fluid Meditations
Her DJ set at the Elsewhere Hall in Brooklyn is my pick for best mix of the year, and this album perfectly translates her ability to guide your body and mood effortlessly from start to finish. She’s addressing the listener like a priestess or a shaman the whole time, it’s very cool, and the mindfulness aspect of it doesn’t come across as heavy-handed, but if you choose to engage with it you can leave the album feeling changed…
Hannah Diamond – Perfect Picture
All of my dreams feel closer to coming true when I listen to anything she makes, and especially this album. She sees a field of dandelions not as a bunch of weeds but rather as a bunch of wishes waiting to be made. This album feels like a soundtrack to a movie about me during high school sitting in a Wawa parking lot, in my car, with my friends, on a school night, drinking coffee and talking, and not wanting to drive home yet… She’s showing us our own immense emotional landscapes, and that’s what a true queen does. Period. Amen.
RUBEN’S PICKS
Amaarae – Fountain Baby
Every song is a hit. I drove to a lot of places listening to this album.
Frost Children – SPEED RUN
Fuck it this album is so fun. When we first heard it we couldn’t believe our ears. A lot of everything in the best way. Minimalism is over.
Skrillex – Quest For Fire
It’s about time Skrillex got some critical love. A huge album from a generational talent.
