He had admitted being part of two Nazi organisations after 1933 – the Sturmabteilung security service and the Schutzstaffel (SS) – but he argued in 1971 that “at the start you had to take part a little in one way or another”, because if they had found out he was opposed, it would been tricky to pass exams.
