In the press materials for Glitterer‘s new album Rationale, Ned Russin said that the first song he wrote for the album, “It’s My Turn,” was “about getting a job,” and that “a lot of the subsequent songs continued in that territory, wondering about what I should be doing, trying to figure out my ‘purpose,’ both philosophically and vocationally.” Those feelings informed a lot of what we discussed on the new episode of the BrooklynVegan podcast, which veered into the balance between DIY ethos and capitalist realities, between art vs commerce and the way art is valued (or undervalued) in general), and thoughts on what might have to happen for DIY scenes to thrive in present day the way they have in the past.
Ned also spoke about turning Glitterer from a solo project into a full band–with DC/Baltimore musicians Nicole Dao on keyboard, Jonas Farah on drums, and now-former guitarist Connor Morin–and reconnecting with the part of him that plays music with other people and treats music as a communal thing. That’s also how Rationale came together–it was written and recorded by a band that’s very much a band and not Ned’s solo project. And, as he discusses on the episode, the album really finds the former Title Fight member in his most natural comfort zone, without it sounding like a retread of anything he’s done before.

Glitterer are also on tour now opening The Hotelier and Foxing‘s Home, Like Noplace Is There / The Albatross 10th anniversary tour (we talk about that on the episode too), and after that, they’ll do a headlining tour with support from Glixen that hits Brooklyn on March 8 at The Meadows.
