The Influence Behind Allegra Krieger I put my feet on fragile surfaces
Clarice Lispector
While writing and recording this album, I read a lot of Clarice Lispector. It’s a mild obsession – I’m totally drawn to her writing. It’s sharp and direct, but also free and unresolved. She seems to be very sensitive to the intimacy of everyday life and sensitive to the universe.
my apartment
These songs wouldn’t exist if I didn’t live where I’ve lived for the past few years. Moldy ceilings, five flights of stairs, people welding on the sidewalk below, sparks flying, little mice living behind my fridge, orange glowing apartment across the street, fish being pickled next to clothes drying on the roof, mourning pigeons on the air conditioner, walk to work, under bridges, pink light reflecting off the brick wall across the alley, narrow corridors where shoes sit, plants that never die.
Judy Hill
Judee’s music is hopeful and spiritual, and I find it life-affirming. The lyric “However we are is OK” in the song “Lopin Through the Cosmos”… I could go on and on about the song, it’s been a huge inspiration to me as a writer and as a person.
New York City
I love New York and the creativity and resilience here, but life here isn’t always easy. The people here are real, they recognize the hurt, they celebrate the beauty, and they try their best to make it work.
service industry
I really like service industry workers, not to romanticize it because it’s ultimately just a job and has a lot of toxic traits, but I just appreciate the weird, dreamy indulgent nature of many of the people who end up in it. Also, many of my colleagues are artists and can inspire creatively. Plus, they make me laugh. On the other hand, it reminds us how harsh and careless we, as humans, can be in our consumption. However, sometimes it feels good to be of service to someone; accomplishing some simple tasks, which feels in keeping with the theme of the album. Anyway, I’ve worked in bars and restaurants for most of my adult life, so the influences are bound to filter through.
glass irony and god
A novel/poem by Anne Carson. Just beautiful. I keep a copy next to my bed and read it often.
