Bola Ahmed Tinubu (born March 29, 1952) is a Nigerian politician who is the 16th and current president of Nigeria.
He was the governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007; and senator for Lagos West in the Third Republic.
Tinubu was born in Lagos, Nigeria, to a Muslim family from the Yoruba ethnic group. He studied accounting at Chicago State University in the United States, and then returned to Nigeria to work as an accountant for Mobil Oil.
He entered politics in the early 1990s, and was elected senator for Lagos West in 1992. After the annulment of the 1993 elections, Tinubu was arrested and detained for several months.
In 1999, Tinubu was elected governor of Lagos State. He served two terms as governor, during which time he oversaw a period of rapid economic growth and development in the state. He is credited with reforming the civil service, improving infrastructure, and attracting foreign investment to Lagos.
After leaving office as governor, Tinubu remained active in politics. He was a key figure in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, and he played a major role in the party’s victory in the 2015 presidential election. Tinubu was also instrumental in the APC’s victory in the 2019 presidential election.
In 2023, Tinubu was elected president of Nigeria. He is the second person from the Yoruba ethnic group to be elected president of Nigeria.
Tinubu is a controversial figure, and his presidency has been met with both praise and criticism. However, there is no doubt that he is one of the most powerful and influential politicians in Nigeria.
