Real Estate have announced their sixth album, Daniel, which will be out February 23 via Domino. For it they worked with Daniel Tashian, who leads The Silver Seas, but has become known for his production and arrangement skills, having worked with Kacey Musgraves, Burt Bacharach, and more. (Is the title a nod to him? “Maybe.”) The band cite R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People and ’90s soft rock as sonic touchstones for this one.
The first single from the album is “Water Underground,” which finds Tashian not messing with Real Estate’s signature jangly sound all that much. “This song is about writing songs,” says frontman Martin Courtney. “I think ‘Water Underground’ is like the unconscious, the mysterious part of your brain where creativity comes from. The constant flow of music in the back of your head. You get an idea while driving or walking the dog or something and you want to hold on to it.”
The “Water Underground” video is sweet homage to beloved ’90s Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete & Pete, with a lot of nods/references to specific episodes, and co-starring the Petes themselves, Danny Tamberelli and Michael Maronna. The video was directed by Edmond Hawkins and conceptualized and produced by Tamberelli and Maronna, with Pete & Pete creators Chris Viscardi and Will McRobb.
“New Jersey roots are hard to break,” says Tamberelli of reprising his Little Pete role for the video. “Julian, Alex and Martin all grew up one town away from me and were actually friends with the younger siblings of my friends from Ridgewood. They told me they even saw me perform at the local bandshell with some of those older siblings while I was in high school. The video brings it full circle and adding my dear old friends from the show into the fold really tied it all together.” Watch that below.
Real Estate have also announced a 2024 tour which has them out, at various points along the way, with Water From Your Eyes, Florry and Marina Allen. The NYC stop is at Webster Hall on April 18 with Marina Allen. Tickets for all dates go on sale Friday, December 1 at 10 AM local time and you can check out their tour schedule below.
