La Liga teams might lose their spots when the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League, Europa League and the Conference League kick off in September 2023.
This is due to the threat that was made by the Spanish FA to leave UEFA if they decide to suspend the European governing body UEFA to consider expelling its president Luis Rubiales from his office following the incident with Jennifer Hermoso.
If this threat becomes a reality this would mean all Spanish clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona would be excluded from UEFA competitions like the Champions League (also affecting Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad), Europa League (Villarreal and Real Betis), and the Europa Conference League (Osasuna).
However, FIFA had already announced the suspension of Luis Rubiales with immediate effect. According to the body, the suspension will last at least 90 days and this means he can not be involved in any football situation pending when the case is been sorted.
The Spanish Football Association’s boss said in a statement on Friday, August 25, 2023, that he vowed he would not resign, despite the criticism for kissing Hermoso on the lips as Spain celebrated winning the Women’s World Cup.
