Roger Waters, who apparently would rather do anything than reunite with Pink Floyd, has been planning a re-recording of the group’s seminal 1973 solo work The dark side of the moon. He’s now confirmed an October 6th release date, and he’s further previewing the album’s lead single, “Money” (Roger’s version).
Waters produced the record, titled Dark Side of the Moon Remastered The tracks were recorded with Gus Seyffert and with the studio band consisting of Seyffert, Joey Waronker, Jonathan Wilson, Johnny Shepherd and Jon Carin. Notably, none of the other members of the Pink Floyd band who helped create the original, including David Gilmour and Nick Mason, appear on the recording.
“Original dark side of the moon In a way, it felt like an elder lamenting the human condition,” Waters said in a statement. “But Dave, Rick, Nick, and I were young when it was created, and when you look at the world around us, it’s clear that the message wasn’t firmly held in mind. That’s why I started thinking about what the 80-year-old’s wisdom could bring to the reimagined version. “
He continued: “When I first mentioned the idea of re-recording dark side of the moon For Gus and Sean, we both thought I was crazy, but the more we thought about it, the more we thought, “Isn’t that the point?” I’m very proud of what we’ve created, a work that can proudly stand hand-in-hand with the original over half a century. “
While the original “Money” epitomized ’70s psychedelic rock, Waters’ version replaces the energetic, bright lead vocals with an ominous, near-whisper voice at least an octave lower. He also slowed down the tempo, which ended up giving the track a weirder feel.
