Screamo bands Snag and Coma Regalia are releasing a full-length split LP on October 6 via Middle-Man Records (pre-order) (and via Shove Records in Europe), and we’re premiering the first taste of Snag’s half, “On the Human Condition,” along with a video for the song. The song opens and closes with a lurching rhythm and hypnotic guitar line that hooks you right away, and then turns into blasty fury with harshly-screamed lyrics dealing with depression fueled by the times we’re living in. The video, however, puts a more hopeful spin on things. The band explains:
Sam Szymborski, guitar:
“To not beat around the bush, lyrically this song is a real bummer. The lyrics deal with depression and its unbearable weight of feeling numb and upset all the time. And somehow it continues to feel heavier and heavier. We wanted to pair the song with a video that hopefully portrays the fact that although you are feeling low and anxious and that everything is just the goddamn worst – that there are people out there to help, there are people out there to show you love, to organize, to lift you up – there are communities that are able to give people the support they need when they need it. We are all in this mess together. Find the ones you love and keep them close.”Peter Murphy, bass & vocals: “Every single day we participate at all in this economic system is a day we worsen the climate crisis. That sentiment was the motivation behind the lyrics but we wanted to offer something less despairing for the video, which suggests the collectivism of DIY culture and direct action as a kind of counterpoint.”
Bryan Wysocki, drums: “The video not only shows the struggles of living in this consistently violent and oppressive time, but how we can combat the depression that it causes through community, music, and friendship.”
