So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
DEATHCRASH – “HITS” & “TENS”
Deathcrash have announced a deluxe edition of this year’s great Less featuring two new songs and remixes by Water From Your Eyes, Mandy Indiana, and more. The two new songs are out now, and both find the slowcore-ish band’s sound in fine form.

SHABAZZ PALACES – “WOKE UP IN A DREAM” (ft. LIL TRACY)
Shabazz Palaces’ Ishmael Butler and his son Lil Tracy usually make very different styles of music, but they come together for something seamless on this psychedelic rap song. Ishmael says, “My son hella influences me, and not just musically. He was home visiting, and we were just lounging around, talking shit and smoking weed, etc. Over the course of the night, he would go in and lay stuff down. Between breaks for eating and watching the game, he’d go back in, layering and sculpting and then floating the background ghost vocals. I was trying to play it cool, but I was geeked – when I heard what he did, I was like, “DAMN, this dude is really HIM.”

CIVIC – “HOURGLASS”
Just ahead of their first North American tour, Aussie garage punks CIVIC have shared this new burner recorded during the same sessions as this year’s Taken by Force.
—
MARIKA HACKMAN – “NO CAFFEINE”
UK artist Marika Hackman is back with her first new music in four years. Playful and melodic, “No Caffeine” splits the difference, sonically, between her elegant debut album and her more pop-oriented second album. Let’s hope there’s more like this to follow soon.

MOLLY BURCH – “DAYDREAMER”
Molly Burch’s new album Daydreamer is out later this month, and the latest single is “Tattoo,” a ballad featuring backing vocals and harp from Luna Li. “I wrote this song for my best friend Lena who passed away when we were 19,” Molly says. “She was truly the most special person I’ve ever known. It’s hard to describe her. She was the most fearless, daring person who did anything for a laugh. For example, on our senior year scavenger hunt she got a teacher’s name tattoo’d on her ass. That isn’t the tattoo I’m referring to on this song, though. Before she passed she got a symbol on her breast bone that meant ‘no fear.’ After she passed I decided to get the same tattoo in the same place so I would always have her close to my heart and remember to not be afraid. I wrote this song for her because Daydreamer is about my relationship to music and she was the first person I played music with. I hope it does her justice.”

SALLY SHAPIRO – “RENT” (PET SHOP BOYS COVER)
“I am a longtime fan of Pet Shop Boys and have been thinking from time to time about covering some PSB song, without any clear idea of how to do it,” says Sally Shapiro’s Johan Agebjörn. “Suddenly it became apparent that the melancholic and painfully beautiful harmonies of ‘Rent’ would suit our style perfectly, and I started playing a synth line over the chorus.”

SUN JUNE – “JOHN PRINE” & “EASY VIOLENCE”
Sun June have given us two more early tastes of their new album Bad Dream Jaguar, the dreamy “John Prine” and “Easy Violence.”
—
MUNYA – “BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE” (NEW ORDER COVER)
Munya’s cover of New Order’s classic 1986 single “Bizarre Love Triangle” falls somewhere between the orignal and Frente’s acoustic version which was a hit in 1992. “I heard them for the first time when I was a kid,” says Josie Boivin (who is Munya). “My big sisters forbade me from entering their rooms, but when they would leave for school, I’d sneak in and listen to their CDs, and [Frente’s] cover became one of my favorite songs. I listened to it again for the first time in a while recently and I knew I had to include it in Jardin.”

THE RURAL ALBERTA ADVANTAGE – “CONDUCTORS”
The Rural Alberta Advantage announced their first full-length album in six years, The Rise & The Fall, due out October 6 via Saddle Creek/Paper Bag Records. The first single is the propulsive, percussive “Conductors,” about which Nils Edenloff says, “There is so much I love about being in a band. But one of its most fundamental aspects causes me more mental anguish than anything else, and that’s actually writing songs. When I’m able to tune out the doubting voice in my head and get it done, there’s no greater feeling. But often the devil wins and it’s easier to just run away. Paul and Amy know about this struggle, and are usually very supportive. But when the world was first getting swept up in ChatGPT and we were deep in the songwriting process, Paul found it hilarious to ask the bot to create lyrics in the style of ‘The Rural Alberta Advantage’. I guess being reminded that you’re easily replaceable got me thinking about why I run from something I know can, and often does, bring me so much joy. I can say with total honesty none of the lyrics Paul coaxed from the AI made it onto the record, nor did any particularly move me. So for now, good old fashioned sweat, pen to paper inspiration still won the day for us.”

—
BLONDSHELL – “STREET RAT”
Blondshell announced a deluxe edition of her self-titled debut album, one of our favorites of the year so far, with a new version of “Street Rat,” which she’s been performing live for a while. “I wrote ‘Street Rat’ the day we finished tracking the album so it really feels like part of the same era to me,” she says. “If I had written it one day earlier it would’ve been on the album. It’s a song about all of the mental gymnastics behind wanting to give up a bad habit, but not being able to despite knowing you should.”
—
EVIAN CHRIST – “ON EMBERS”

A.A. WILLIAMS – “WITHOUT YOU I’M NOTHING” (PLACEBO COVER)
Ahead of her tour with Sleep Token, dark singer/songwriter A.A. Williams has shared a new cover of Placebo’s “Without You I’m Nothing.” “When I first discovered Placebo as a teen, I felt as if I’d found a world just for me,” she says. “Barely a day went by without their songs in my headphones, their explorations of angst, frustration and alienation speaking to me like nothing I’d heard before… Simultaneously brand new and familiar, I felt that I’d been understood for the first time, all the while being fed with musical styles I wasn’t familiar with – glam, goth, electro and punk were all introduced to me through Placebo’s melancholy lens… I’ve dreamed of covering a Placebo song for years. I think it always had to be ‘Without You I’m Nothing,’ a song of longing and loss that for me will always feel current and relevant, as someone who always felt that human connection was the key to happiness – and as an outsider looking in, as someone uncomfortable in their own skin.”
—

—
BROKEN VOW – “REVERSAL”

PIP BLOM – “GET BACK”
“One of the things I am most happy with on this album is the vocal sound,” says Pip Blom in regards to the latest single from the forthcoming Bobbie. “My voice sounds warm and intimate, but also punchy and fierce at other times. During the recording of the vocals in the chorus, we laughed a lot because it turned out to be quite difficult to say Get Back so many times in a row. I love how Get Back is both a rock song but still sounds very produced. A recurring phenomenon on Bobbie is the vocals with a lot of autotune, which can also be heard in the bridge of this song. Get Back may be one of the loudest songs on the album, yet Claudius managed to give it an even bigger lift in volume and intensity in the last chorus. Hats off!”

NZCA LINES – “UNIVERSAL HEARTBREAK”
With Metronomy on touring hiatus, Michael Lovett has more time to focus on his own project NZCA Lines and has a new EP, Universal Heartbreak, due 9/22 via Memphis Industries. This is the title track. “The lyrics of this song draw on darker moments in recent years where I have been poring over mistakes I feel I’ve made, falling into despair, unable to see a way forward,” says Lovett. “The chorus (“but it’s too late / for universal heartbreak”) is me telling myself – and my partner, friends, and everyone – that we can’t afford to dwell on this. Not necessarily that it’s all going to be ok, but that we have to pick ourselves up, and the only way out is to move forward.”
—
WHITELANDS – “THE PROPHET & I”
